Worlds biggest drum set

I got into music because I wanted to be a drummer and for me, the bigger the kit, the better–Neil Peart, Keith Moon, that kind of thing. But according to the Guinness Book of World Records, neither of those guys are listed as having the biggest drum set in the earth. This really, really surprised me.

According to the Guinness people, the guy with the certified largest drum set in the world is–wait for it–Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They say he played a kit with 308 pieces. That number dates to 2008. However, that number has blown away.

A guy named Tag Temperato—a full-time minister as skillfully as a musician—has a kit featuring 813 pieces. That was in 2021. His goal is to make it to 1,000.

The last post talked about ripping every song ever recorded.

Seven of the Largest, Loudest, and Longest Drum-Related World Records

Did you know that the world’s largest drum is nearly 20 feet tall and weighs over 15,000 pounds?! At CPS, we love learning about impressive feats of human ingenuity and sharing what we know with you! Read on to find out more about this incredible Korean instrument and other record-setting drums around the globe.

The use of drums can be traced back to at least 5500 BC when they were used in religious ceremonies and other celebrations by ancient Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, Mesopotamian, and Roman cultures. Over the last several millenniums, the instrument and its uses have significantly evolved, and today, it is played for all different purposes by millions of musicians worldwide.

Here are a few of our favorite world records from recent years set by drummers all around the globe:

Largest Drum

(July 6, 2011) The largest drum in the world is a traditional Korean “CheonGo” drum that Yeong Dong-Gun, Seuk Je Lee, and local government members made. It measures 18’2” in diameter, is 19’6” tall, and weighs a whopping 7 tonnes – that’s over 15,000 pounds!

I haven’t written about someone who’s broken a world record in a while. Those people are always inspiring to me because they believe they can create or do something that has never been done before, and they push themselves until they succeed. Snagging a world record is actually on my own bucket list. I don’t know a lot about drum sets, but I do know that they don’t usually consist of hundreds of pieces. This one is different though. It’s the world’s largest drum set.

When Dr. Mark Temperato got confirmation that his set was in fact officially the world’s largest drum set, it only had 340 pieces. That was in October of 2011. Since then, he has been meticulously added a lot more pieces to it. Now it has 813 pieces, and he’s stopping for now. His birthday is on August 13, so he thought 813 would be a good place to take a break. It would take quite a few drum lessons from takelessons to learn how to navigate a drum kit like that! He plans to hit 1,000 pieces before it’s all said and done.

You might wonder how long it took him to build this…it took him 36 years! Keep in mind, he’s not finished yet. It’s obviously bec

Zappa Drum Legend Terry Bozzio on Touring the World’s Largest Tuned Kit

Terry Bozzio — one of rock drumming’s most formidable and brain-circuiting forces — is currently touring America, playing solo dates on “the world’s largest tuned drum and percussion set.” Best known as the hurricane behind Frank Zappa’s late-Seventies and early-Eighties work, and the hit-maker behind new wave powerhouse Missing Persons, Bozzio, 63, is hoping to shed his reputation as technical solo shredder. Following successful tours in Europe and Japan, “An Evening With Terry Bozzio,” is the first time he’s touring a melodic solo percussion performance in North America — hitting 40 dates, playing on two-and-a-half octaves of tuned tom-toms and eight notes of bass drum. We caught up with him to ask the drumming legend exactly how he’s lugging this thing across America.

How are you doing?
Man, I’m in hell right now!

Do tell…
I’m on my way to San Diego for the first gig of the big tour here and we snapped a serpentine belt in my SUV, so we’re trying to find a garage to fix it in and make the gig o
