Overview of the Short-Answer Question (SAQ)
The AP Exam includes three required short-answer questions (SAQ).
SAQs 1 and 2 are required and both include a text or visual stimulus. The stimulus for SAQ 1 will be from a secondary source, and the stimulus for SAQ 2 will be from a primary source. The stimulus will not give away the answers, but will relate to the topics or content of at least one part of the SAQ. The topics of these questions will relate to content between:
- 1200-2001 in AP World History
- 1754-1980 in AP US History
- 1600-2001 in AP European History
For SAQs 3 or 4, you will choose ONE of these questions to answer. Neither of these questions will include a stimulus, so you will have to rely on your knowledge of history entirely to answer these questions.
For SAQ 3, the topic will relate to content between:
- 1200-1750 in AP World History
- 1491-1877 in AP US History
- 1450-1815 in AP European History
For SAQ 4, the topic will relate to content between:
- 1750-2001 in AP World History
- 1865-2001 in AP US History
- 1815-2001 in AP European History

The second part of Section I of the AP Exam also includes three required short-answer questions.

Students may select short-answer questions 3 or 4, neither of which includes a stimulus. Short-answer question 3 will focus on historical developments or processes between the years 1200 and 1750. Short-answer question 4 will focus on historical developments or processes between the years 1750 and 2001.
All four historical periods are represented among the four short-answer questions.
