Worlds lightest wheelchair

The world’s lightest wheelchair will be made from graphene

Swiss-based company Küschall, in partnership with a Formula 1 manufacturer, designed what they say is the world’s lightest wheelchair, made from graphene.

The Küschall Superstar, as the wheelchair will be called, has a frame that is 30 per cent lighter and 20 per cent stronger than classic carbon wheelchairs. Thanks to ‘space age’ material graphene, the frame of the wheelchair will weigh less than 1.5 kilograms (3 pounds).

Graphene, an atom-thin material made from graphite, is 200 times stronger than steel. One of the most trending materials, graphene has been used in many products, from paint to jackets, but for the wheelchair market, Küschall’s version is a first.

Using computer-aided design combined with the tube sizing, the company promises that the wheelchair will deliver an incredible performance. It’s top acceleration is 1.3 m/s2 and has 98 per cent propelling efficiency.

The Superstar will be tailor made to ensure a perfect fit for the user. It has an adaptable seating position and fully integrated seat cushion for optimal posture and comfort.

“World’s lightest wheelchair” offers bespoke and comfortable solution for users

Küschall has set out to deliver the world’s lightest wheelchair called Superstar, which has been designed to give users optimal levels of posture and comfort.

As the chair is a tailor-made solution, it corrects users’ posture and maximises their performance by allowing them to choose the option which is the most suitable for them. The Superstar also comes with a variety of features such as adaptable seating positions, an adjustable backrest and a fully integrated seat cushion.

According to Küschall, its new chair offers the best weight to acceleration performance compared with other wheelchairs. As it is bespoke, the Superstar also reduces the risk of upper body extremities in the future because users are seated in the position which best suits their needs.

The company added that the wheelchair has superb power transfer through the entire frame, meaning it will respond quickly with every movement. Additionally, the chair’s road dampening properties provide an “effortless” glide” for users.

Küschall used aerospace materials and worked in collaboration with a Formula 1 manufacturer to create i

Panthera was founded in Sweden in 1986 by Jalle Jungnell and since 2022, Panthera has been part of Permobil. Panthera’s objective was, and still is, to build the world’s lightest chair. The carbon fiber Panthera X only weighs an amazing 2.1 kg. Panthera manual wheelchairs center on user-friendliness, quality and organism lightweight, and are for adults and children alike. Their maneuverability and low weight make them ideal for active lifestyles. The ultra-light models are designed for very active lifestyles and advanced users used to handling finely balanced wheelchairs.

The history of Panthera

In 1976, 22-year-old Jalle Jungnell crashed during a road racing event and broke his spine. Soon after, he took up wheelchair basketball but found that the wheelchairs of the time were not well suited for sports. With inspiration from racing technology Jalle therefore started to construct his own wheelchairs. This led to the foundation of Panthera in 1986.

“I learnt some apparent rules from racing, such as the significance of low weight, a rigid chassis, correct balancing in the chassis. My target was to build the lightest chair ever. There have been many wheelchairs and a lot of wheelchair users
