Greetings, Adventurers!

The Flail is a versatile one-handed weapon with the option for an offhand shield. Use arcane magic to enhance its attacks and buff allies or debuff enemies to aid in victory. Through a combination of melee, arcane magic, and strong defenses, the wielder can bolster their group’s effectiveness without having to drop the offensive. We joined the Design Team for a deeper look at the Flail’s design, weapon comparisons, and Weapon Mastery Trees, plus some other neat tidbits.

Gameplay Design

What the Flail lacks in raw damage, it makes up for in survivability, support, and utility. Whether you swipe, thrust, strike, or unleash magical AoEs, all attacks have buffs/debuffs that alter their combat function.

Versatility is another notable quality of the weapon. Several Flail passives and upgrades function differently based on your shield type and the combat situation. This customization extends to playstyle. Most abilities feature support-focused attack upgrades, so solo players can potentially forego these skills to better spec themselves out for their own survival.

  What is the Flail?

  The Flail is a one-handed melee weapon with extended range that provides massive support and has great tanking potential, and can be combined with a shield.

  It's the first weapon in New World to scale with Strength and Focus, so it can be paired with various weapon types (such as life staff, sword and shield, war hammer, spear, hatchet, etc.), making it the most versatile weapon for lots of PvE and PvP end-game builds. So can we aim for the best build in the game and use the Flail as a primary weapon? Absolutely!

  General Information

  The Flail and Shield Weapon is a melee weapon that scales from Strength and Fixate. The Flail excels at cover combat and is strongest when used to support allies. It does so in an violent manner where the effects are applied to allies while up close and personal with the fight. The flail utilizes a variety of strike and arcane magic attacks. This results in lower damage, but the oppressive nature of the flail allows the wielder to be a force to be reckoned with during the fight.

  The two mastery trees for the flail consist of the Cleric and Bastion mastery trees.

  Cleric Mastery Tree

  The Cleric Mastery Tree is focused on Group support and Dealing AOE Arcane damage. Below is a breakdown of the Active Skills and Key Passive of the Cleric Mastery Tree.

  I'm working on a cleric flail build. The damage is.. meh.. but I'm only around level 35. I'm going for an ALL light armor, strength to 500, rest in focus build and i'm questioning its viability. I don't like using other people's builds or meta stuff, so I'm kinda just winging it.
