‘BODY WORLD' exhibit at Science Museum of Virginia explores mind-body connection to happiness

RICHMOND, Va. — "BODY WORLDS: The Anatomy of Happiness," which is now open at the Science Museum of Virginia, explores how contentment impacts the human body.

"Happiness is not just mental health. Happiness is a whole-body system," Rose Basom, the museum's David and Jane Cohn scientist, explained. "And it doesn't just affect our mental well-being it affects all of our organs overall."

Basom hopes that people reflect on what makes them happy after seeing the exhibit.

"Have a deeper understanding of the knowledge of what makes our bodies work, how they function and how those emotions affect those functions and feel more empowered to make the decisions that they do in their life," she said.

Basom said one of the things in the exhibit that makes her happy is the chocolate tower.

"Actually one of my favorite exhibits is this chocolate tower, and it's talking about how choices can lead to our feelings of happiness or feeling like, we're not particularly satisfied," Basom said.

Discovering the Anatomy of Happiness

May 21, 2024

What makes you happy? Is it chocolate? Is it long walks on the beach? Is it skateboarding? While the specific activity that makes an individual happy might vary, the impact of happiness of the human mind and body is universal. How do we know this? The answers lounge within “BODY WORLDS: The Anatomy of Happiness,” opening at the Science Museum of Virginia on May 25.

A powerful emotional phenomenon, happiness influences our movements, perceptions, sensations, mood and more. Through hundreds of human specimens called plastinates featured in the touring exhibition, guests can explore how anatomy is involved in happiness and how positive or negative emotions can affect health. They will understand what happiness is and the science behind it by discovering the complexity, resilience and vulnerability of what lies beneath the skin.

“Nothing compares to getting an up-close, three-dimensional view of the inner workings of complex biological systems,” said Rose Basom, the Science Museum’s David and Jane Cohn Scientist. “The specimens are stunning, dramatic and beautiful, a celebration of experience in both form and function. ‘BODY WORLDS’ i

What is BODY WORLDS?

BODY WORLDS: The Original Exhibition, is the first exhibition of its kind to inform the visitor about anatomy, physiology and health by viewing real human bodies preserved through plastination, the preservation process invented by Dr. Gunther von Hagens in 1977, while he was working as an anatomist at the University of Heidelberg. Since the beginning of the exhibition series in Japan in 1995, more than 57 million visitors in 42 countries in over 170 cities in the Americas, Europe, South Africa, Asia, and Australasia have seen the world's most successful traveling exhibition.

What does BODY WORLDS show?

Each BODY WORLDS exhibition contains real human specimens, including whole-body plastinates as well as individual organs, organ configurations and translucent body slices. The spectacular plastinates in the exhibition take the visitor on an exciting journey of discovery under the skin. It provides a comprehensive insight into the anatomy and physiology of the human body. In addition to organ functions, common diseases are described in an easily understood manner by comparing healthy and affected organs. They show the long-term impact of diseases and a

“BODY WORLDS” features organs, biological systems and full bodies without skin so guests can see the bones, muscles, tendons, nerves, tissue and blood vessels. Specimens are dry, odorless and virtually everlasting. All bodies featured in the exhibition were willingly donated to the Institute for Plastination during the donor’s lifetime for this purpose.
