The hope of new growth new world
Reflecting on my experience with emotional growth
My name is Laura Gallant. I am a research associate at the HOPE National Resource Center, and I write many of our blog posts on the HOPE framework, the Four Building Blocks of HOPE, positive childhood experiences (PCEs), and more. When I first learned about the Four Building Blocks of HOPE, I felt a real connection to the Building Block of emotional growth. It made me think about my adolescence and who I am now as an adult. What sticks out to me is my experience of failures. Growing up, I had to gain a deep well of self-love and self-compassion to help me through these difficult experiences, including situations that often felt out of my control.
Finding new measures of success beyond winning a game
For example, I always think about my time playing sports in high school. I played soccer, swimming, and tennis. In each sport, we would lose – very badly. My teammates and I would often leave the soccer field with a double-digit loss. Our team would score no or little points. It could be demoralizing, but it taught me to look for smaller wins in other places. As a team, we would get back on the bus laughing and yelling and cheering
Kitega in 2025: A New Chapter of Growth and Hope
2025 marks a fresh beginning for the Kitega Community Centre. As we enter our next 25 years, we reflect on a legacy of impact and look ahead to even more transformative work. From empowering young adults with disabilities to launching new community projects, Kitega continues to stand for inclusion, dignity, and hope.
From Children to Changemakers: Youth with Disabilities Step Forward
In 1999, Kitega began as a place of care for children with disabilities. Today, many of those children are young adults, ready to take on the world.
With the support of our team and partners, 15 young people are now involved in vocational training, employment, and income-generating projects. These programs are designed to help them live independently and contribute meaningfully to the wider community.
“I never thought I could earn my own income. Now I make briquates and help support my family. Kitega helped me believe in myself again.”- Ibra
Hosting Press Freedom Day:
Kitega was proud to host the Regional International Press Freedom Day this year. Journalists, activists, and leaders gathered at the Centre to celebrate the im
The Limits to Growth
Published 1972 – The message of this book still holds today: The earth’s interlocking resources – the global system of nature in which we all live – probably cannot support present rates of economic and population growth much beyond the year 2100, if that long, even with advanced technology. In the summer of 1970, an international team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) began a study of the implications of continued worldwide growth. They examined the five basic factors that determine and, in their interactions, ultimately limit growth on this planet-population increase, agricultural production, nonrenewable resource depletion, industrial output, and pollution generation. The MIT team fed data on these five factors into a global computer model and then tested the behaviour of the model under several sets of assumptions to determine alternative patterns for humankind’s future. The Limits to Growth is the nontechnical report of their findings. The book contains a message of hope as well. The authors state that: “The challenge of overshoot from decision delay is real, but easily solvable if human society decided to act,” me
